Journalist Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Italian giants A.S. Roma are set to complete the signing of Chelsea right-back Davide Zappacosta. The 27-year-old will arrive at the Stadio Olimpico on an initial loan deal.

Another of Chelsea’s Transfer Failures
The Italian arrived at Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2017 for a fee reaching almost £30 million. However, he has failed to live up to the expectations set by the Chelsea hierarchy.
During his first season with the Blues, Zappacosta made 27 appearances. However, almost half of those appearances came from the bench. He only managed to play a full 90 minutes just seven times across the season, five of which he did manage to help Chelsea keep a clean sheet in.
Upon the arrival of Maurizio Sarri in his only season in charge at Stamford Bridge, Zappacosta was deemed surplus to requirements. He made just four appearances in the Premier League, and instead was used in rotation in Chelsea’s Europa League-winning campaign. As a result, it has now meant a move away for the 27-year-old.
How Will Davide Zappacosta Fit in at Roma?
Roma are already well-stocked in defence. As a result, it is likely that he will provide competition for places during his season-long loan.
Former Newcastle United man Davide Santon is one of a number of options that Roma currently have at right-back. Last season the 28-year-old made 21 appearances in all competitions, as he helped his side finish sixth in Serie A.
What Does This Mean for Chelsea?
Frank Lampard’s willingness to give youth a go at Stamford Bridge has been well documented. As a result, it could mean that youngster Reece James will be the one to provide cover for Cesar Azpilicueta this season.
James spent last season on loan at Championship side Wigan Athletic, where he made 45 appearances in their league campaign.
