Jose Mourinho has been announced as the new Tottenham Hotspur Head Coach. With his 25 senior trophies, he will replace Mauricio Pochettino in Daniel Levy’s attempts to change the trajectory of the club.

Will Jose Mourinho Be Able to Change Spurs’ Fortunes?

Levy and Mourinho: The Quotes

On the official Tottenham Hotspur website, they have published the following:

Firstly, Levy praises his new Head Coach; “In Jose we have one of the most successful managers in football. He has a wealth of experience, can inspire teams and is a great tactician. He has won honours at every club he has coached. We believe he will bring energy and belief to the dressing room.”

Mourinho says; “I am excited to be joining a Club with such a great heritage and such passionate supporters. The quality in both the squad and the academy excites me. Working with these players is what has attracted me.”

Pochettino Sacked Too Soon

Levy cited the prolonged period of poor form for Pochettino’s sacking. It was made in the “club’s best interests”. And indeed, Spurs’ recent form has been unacceptable. However, the sacking of the manager signifies a return to the old ideology of Levy. The ‘hire and fire’ model doesn’t allow for any kind of loyalty. Pochettino has put in five years of impressive work at the club. His aims and targets were achieved prematurely, culminating in last year’s Champions League final. Now, just imagine if the manager had won Spurs’ first piece of European glory since 1984.

Arguably, Pochettino deserved more time to affect a change in his side. He has done so much for the club. Furthermore, by sacking him, the blame for poor form is in effect all on him. This masks for some dire performances from the players. Furthermore, it masks the issues regarding certain players wanting to leave the club but having to just see out their contracts. It protects the board and the chairman.

Can Jose Mourinho Make a Change?

In today’s game, sacking a manager is an easy solution to change up a side in the endeavour to improve results. Mourinho is a manager with fantastic experience, and crucially with winning experience at top English clubs. There is no doubt that he is probably the best new manager that the club could have realistically got.

Mourinho will bring his own ideas to the club. There will be a shift, however slow or fast, to his new philosophy and tactics. Can fans expect him to win a trophy in his first season? This is highly unlikely, but not impossible. But, if the club starts improving its form and ends up in a decent position at the end of the season, it doesn’t necessarily signify that the change of manager was needed.
