When Tottenham Hotspur secured the signing of  Tanguy Ndombele, last summer, many fans were expecting to see an athletic, dominant midfielder take the Premier League by storm. However, fast forward nine months and the Frenchman has made little impact on a struggling Spurs side. Now, after just one season in North London, L’Equipe have reported the Frenchman’s desire to leave after a disappointing spell in England.

The news comes after the midfielder was made to take part in Jose Mourinho’s impromptu training session that broke social distancing rules. But, it has to be said, a rift between Mourinho and Ndombele has been going on for months now; Mourinho has not been afraid to call the Frenchman out in his press conferences.

Mourinho stated back in March after taking Ndombele off at half time in a 1-1 draw with Burnley:

“From Tanguy, of course, I think with the quality he has he must have more responsibility in doing to the team what the team needs from a midfield player of his quality.”

The criticism is a classic Mourinho move that will either push a player to play to the level expected or push them out the exit door. In Ndombele’s case, it seems to be the latter despite being named Spurs’ record signing just nine months ago.

Ndombele’s wish to leave Spurs will have top clubs on high alert, with both Real Madrid and Barcelona reportedly interested in the Frenchman according to L’Equipe. The move to either club would be a surprising one; this is considering the Frenchman’s inconsistent form so far this season. But, a move to Spain could see Ndombele’s true potential come out, leaving Mourinho and Spurs feeling regretful.

The 23-year-old will be hoping to reach his best form. Whether that will be for Spurs or another club is yet to be seen after enduring a torrid time so far in England.
