Timo Werner notched a hat trick for RB Leipzig in a 5-0 win over Mainz Sunday, exemplifying why every big club in the world is banging down his door. Owen Hargreaves believes he should skip Liverpool and join Chelsea or Manchester United instead.

Chelsea A ‘Good Fit’ For Timo Werner – Owen Hargreaves

Werner vs Firmino At Liverpool

Werner broke two things Sunday with his three goals – his scoring duck and personal record for Bundesliga goals in a season, now at 24 with seven games remaining. The German scored a perfect 10 on WhoScored against Mainz, with three goals scored from eight shots, five of which were on target, in a man of the match performance. He also had a 100% pass success rate with two key passes included.

On the other hand, Hargreaves, a former Manchester United and Bayern Munich player, may have broken Liverpool hearts with his comments about Werner.

“Well, he’s not going to get past Bobby Firmino, who is one of my favorite players to watch,” Hargreaves said while commentating on the game for BT Sport. He continued, “I think that’s the thing. Wherever he goes, he has to play. With the way [Manchester] United play right now, I could see him there. They need a number nine.”

But Hargreaves wasn’t just playing favourites due to his ties with the Red Devils.

“Chelsea could be a good fit. I just think he’s perfect for Liverpool in a way, but he’s not guaranteed to start. If he’s happy rotating in the front three then yes, he’d be a great fit for Jurgen Klopp” he added.

“[Werner] works hard, he’s a good goal-scorer, he’s a good team-mate. All those things they need, but he’s not going to play ahead of Roberto Firmino. I just don’t see that. He’s too good in that team.”

Werner’s Fit at Chelsea

Like many, Hargreaves sees the immense talent that is Timo Werner. In the Bundesliga this season, Werner has 24 goals, seven assists, nine-man of the match performances, and a fantastic average rating of 7.66. And at 24, he’s just hitting his prime years.

Werner plays a central striker for Leipzig on most occasions and tends to drift out wide to left, allowing him to link with teammates. He is lighting quick and dangerous on the counter-attack. And to complete the packing, he is a deadly finisher in front of goal.

Up front, Tammy Abraham has led the line well for Chelsea in his first Premier League season with the club. Manager Frank Lampard certainly favours the academy graduate as his central striker. And the Blues already have a litany of young wide attackers/midfield attackers in Christian Pulisic, Mason Mount, Callum Hudson-Odoi, and the incoming Hakim Ziyech.

Adding Timo Werner, as incredible as he is, will only add to the overcrowded group of attackers. It would be a great problem to have for the Blues. But he is likely to cost a cool $70 million, according to Transfermarkt, don’t expect Chelsea to bid for him.
