Despite having just nine appearances at his new club, Bruno Fernandes is already a fan favourite at Manchester United. The Portuguese playmaker brought much-needed creativity to the Red Devils’ midfield when joining in late January, and they have not lost a game since his debut. Not only have his individual performances been magnificent, but he has also been influential on his teammates. Players like Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial were in wonderful form before the suspension of football. Now, with its return looming, one can’t help but wonder what the Manchester side would look like without him. Here is why Manchester United need to sign a backup for Bruno Fernandes.
Why Manchester United Need to Sign a Backup for Bruno Fernandes
United were in something of a slump before signing Fernandes. Although they were still in contention for Champions League qualification, they had failed to string together a good run of form. The arrival of the Portuguese brought with it the consistency they had lacked, and losing that to injury could be devastating for the Red Devils.
The return of Paul Pogba will certainly help ease concerns of a lack of creativity in United’s midfield. But the Frenchman’s form since joining from Juventus has been patchy, and relying on him has not worked out particularly well for the United over the past few years.
Fernandes’ importance to his new side is, currently, immeasurable. Losing him to injury could be catastrophic, as seen with other teams’ star players.
Losing a Star Player to Injury Is Devastating
When thinking of the impact of an injured star player, one’s mind finds Tottenham Hotspur and Harry Kane. The Englishman has been fantastic for Spurs for some time now, but without him they look poor.
The London side have not won a match since 16 February, in part down to the absence of Kane, who has been out since January. In other periods when he has been on the sidelines, they have been equally unsuccessful.
Manchester United will not want to make the same mistake with Bruno Fernandes. While the coronavirus has caused financial difficulties, a good backup attacking midfielder could be a vital addition for them.
