FC Bayern Munich secured their eighth consecutive Bundesliga title with two matches left to be played. Their defeat of SV Werder Bremen gives Hansi Flick’s men a ten point lead over second-place Borussia Dortmund. Dortmund can collect at most nine points in their three remaining matches. The Rekord Meister have two matches left: at home to SC Freiburg and away at VFL Wolfsburg.

Werder Bremen Gave Bayern a Tough Match

Tonight’s fixture began as expected. Bayern dominated possession, crafting chances, but Werder Bremen, embroiled in a relegation scrap, were ready to spoil the title party. In a moment of controversy, Alphonso Davies was given a yellow card in the 19th minute for kicking out at Bremen’s Leonardo Bittencourt. The Canadian’s reaction could have easily resulted in a red card.

Just before half-time, Bundesliga top scorer Robert Lewandowski gave Bayern the lead. In the second half, Hansi Flick’s men played keep-ball, ensuring that Bremen had just a few looks at goal. The aforementioned Davies was sent off after a second yellow card just before the 80th minute. Florian Kohfeldt’s side pushed Bayern hard, but Manuel Neuer made a brilliant save to keep Bremen’s best chance at goal out.

Die Roten Got Off to a Slow Start This Season

Under Niko Kovač in the Hinrunde, Bayern lost to both TSG Hoffenheim and Eintracht Frankfurt before November. The Eintracht loss was the Croat’s final match in charge, as the Bayern board chose to move on. Hansi-Flick took over, and while his first match in charge was a four-nil victory over Dortmund, losses to Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Mönchengladbach saw Bayern drop down to seventh place. It seemed as if the eighth consecutive Bundesliga title might not happen.

Bayern Have Dropped Two Points Since the Loss to Gladbach

Just as it looked like Bayern might not be champions, Hansi Flick steadied the ship and brought the best out of the squad. Since the two aforementioned losses, Bayern have won every single game other than a home draw to RB Leipzig. That is 18 wins in 19 matches. Meanwhile, RB Leipzig have won just six, dropping 17 points after beginning the Rückrunde in first place. Dortmund rallied in the second half of the season, but their slow start to the season was too much to overcome.

Consistency Wins the Bundesliga Title

This Bundesliga campaign is much of the same as last season. Bayern start slow, trailing the league leaders by a considerable margin, but then gain form, beat Dortmund, and win the Bundesliga title. Last season, Bayern trailed Dortmund by nine points in October. This season, that gap was seven. This year, however, Bayern won the title with two matches to be played.
