Johnson Leaves After Four and Half Years In Charge

Bristol City have announced the departure of head coach Lee Johnson after four and half years in charge. Johnson was sacked following today’s defeat in the Severn side derby to Cardiff City.

A season which started with so much promise has faded for the Robins and Johnson has paid the price. Their form since the restart has been woeful with City losing all four of their games. The overall picture is no better with City winning just one of their last eleven league games.

City collected have collected just five points in those eleven games, ending their hopes of promotion.

Familiar issues of seasons gone by have hit Bristol City. They perform well during the first half of a season but massively struggle for form during the second. These familiar problems have haunted Johnson once again.

Johnson was a year into a new four-year deal signed in May 2019. He departs with Bristol City sat in twelfth place, nine points adrift of the Championship play-off places.

The club have confirmed current assistant head coach Dean Holden will take immediate charge until a new manager is installed. Holden’s first game will be against Hull City on Wednesday evening.

Mark Ashton: There Have Been Some Special Moments

Speaking to the club website, Chief Executive Mark Ashton said “We recognise the huge amount of work that Lee has put in over the last four-and-a-half years to move this club forward and we thank him for all his efforts.

“There have been some special moments over those years and Lee has played a significant part in them.”

He added: “Success in football is ultimately judged by results and league position and the Board believes that a change of management is needed now for Bristol City.”
